Timothy was called to the bar in 1984, practicing for over 30 years as a specialist trial and appellate advocate in the higher courts of most Australian States. He has acted as an arbitrator and referee in maritime and international arbitration, and has substantial mediation experience.  He has particular experience in cases involving information technology, computer law, intellectual property law especially trade marks and copyright, marine & general insurance, admiralty and maritime law, corporations and insolvency, equity, and succession law.

Prior to this, Timothy completed his education in Melbourne, Australia and was admitted as a solicitor Adelaide in 1978 where he was a Senior Associate at Finlaysons. In 1982, Timothy then moved his practice to Sydney where he was a Senior Associate at Clayton Utz.
